UC schools gerneally have a better reputation. The professors at UC schools are much more likely to be research focused than the CSUs. Several of the CSU schools have strong reputations as party schools (like SDSU). But it really does depend on what you want to major in. For example, if you want to go into Biology, then you definitely want to try for UCSD, UC Davis, etc. But if you want to go into business, for example, UCSD doesn't even have any business majors. So you have to look at each school individually. Be sure to look in your areas of interest, and don't just lok at academics.
